The two books are on Amanda's to-be-read list, so obviously she didn't write the blurbs.

Poe and Fanny, John May - "The novel is set in 1845 New York and chronicles the relationship between Edgar Allan Poe and Fanny Osgood, a poet and famous intellectual beauty of the day.  In this one year, Poe goes from the most sought after literary figure to the most vilified person in New York.  In this year, Poe pens the Raven, starts his own magazine and begins an affair with Fanny, while during this same time, his wife is dying of TB, he's despondent, drunk and broke.  In addition to Poe and Fanny's love story, the public and private lives of other well-know public figures, such as Horace Greeley and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, are highlighted as well."

Breaking the Tongue, Vyvyane Loh - "Takes place suring the fall of Singapore to the Japanese in WWII.  The story's main focus is on one Chinese family.  The characters include a son who is raised to be more British than the Brigish and ashamed of his own heritage, a father whose anglophilia blinds him to possible defeat and his wife's dalliances and a Grandmother whose sage advice falls on deaf ears.  This is a brilliant story of a young man and a nation, a story that deals with myth, race, and class, with the ways language shapes perceptions, and with the intrigue and suffering of war."
