Week 3 Game Summary
Through two games the Dodgeball Dropouts had not allowed a single run, and rumors were flying that they were focused on ruthless domination, not fun. To allay these fears, the Dropouts let the Dukes score a couple runs in the first inning of yesterday’s game. But the team tightened up after that, going back to its holdin’-‘em-scoreless ways, and behind the fearless scorekeeping of Anita Gowda it rolled to a 7-2 victory.
Following the lead of pitchers Mark Wikingstad and Brett Law, the Dropouts’ defense was like a brick wall. Patrick Alley had several good grabs at the hot corner, and Chris Skinner anchored the outfield with a couple inning-killing catches. Tom Reilly made a single-handed double play at first base, and also distinguished himself with a solo homerun to right field in the third inning and a headfirst slide into third in the opening stanza.
Captain Bob Bastek has been forced to defend his team against rumors of doping, and under intense pressure he released the team’s workout regimen to the press. “Our success is just the product of good old-fashioned hard work,” he said.
